The mountains around Nova Friburgo are one of the most rewarding birding areas in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Here the Serra do Mar rises above 2,000 meters, and the Atlantic Forest changes at every turn: dense valley forest, bamboo on the slopes and high-altitude grasslands near the summits.
That variety is what brings birders from all over the world. The range is home to rare species such as the Grey-winged Cotinga, which lives only in the mountains of Rio de Janeiro and is threatened with extinction. Few places two and a half hours from Rio offer anything similar.
Where we go birding
Caledônia Peak (Três Picos State Park)

Caledônia Peak reaches 2,257 meters and is one of the highest points in the region. The trail we use for birding is about 2.5 km long and crosses very different habitats: it starts among bamboo and low trees, enters denser forest and reaches the high-altitude grasslands near the summit.
This is where the montane species live, the most sought-after birds of the area, including the Grey-winged Cotinga, Swallow-tailed Cotinga, Diademed Tanager and, close to the top, the Itatiaia Spinetail.
Macaé de Cima

Macaé de Cima is a valley of slope forest and clear rivers, about one hour by 4×4 from downtown Nova Friburgo, depending on road conditions. The walk is easy and produces many species without much physical effort.
The call of the Bare-throated Bellbird is usually the first thing you hear. With patience you may also find the Brazilian Ruby, Brassy-breasted Tanager, Serra do Mar Tyrant-Manakin and understory antbirds. In the upper parts of the valley, look for the Black-and-gold Cotinga.

When to come and what to bring

Birds are most active in the first hours of the day, so our outings start early and finish before the strong midday sun.
- Park hours: Caledônia Peak opens Tuesday to Sunday from 5 a.m.; the climb to the summit starts at 7 a.m.
- ID: bring an official photo ID (your passport), requested at the park entrance.
- Clothing: it gets cold quickly at altitude. Dress in layers, with a windbreaker and hiking shoes.
- Gear: binoculars, a camera with zoom if you photograph, and a field guide or identification app.
- In your backpack: water, snacks, sunscreen and a rain jacket. Speakers are not allowed in the park.
Every season has its charm. The drier months, from May to September, bring firm trails and clear mornings. In spring many species sing more and are easier to locate.
